About Spearmint

Spearmint (Mentha Spicata) – we sourced this one from Spain.  It has a gentle minty fragrance which isn’t quite as strong as that of Peppermint. Everyone knows the taste of Spearmint breath fresheners and the essential oil is even better.  Spearmint essential oil is a cool oil and also a top note. The oil has a soft sweet taste. You can take it internally, if done responsibly. See our responsible usage guide here.

Firstly, Spearmint is known to have strong anti-fungal properties and especially so against Candida and Penicillum. It has also proven strong against biofilm formation in its anti-bacterial benefits. It even has anti-parasitic activity against certain parasites.

Spearmint is also known to have immunomodulatory effects by increasing immunostimulating agents. It increases the CD3+ T lymphocites infiltration in the body’s immune system.  This strengthens the immune system and assists in the body fighting diseases. Along with this, Spearmint’s anti-inflammatory benefits even further strengthens the body.  It does this by inhibiting inflammatory signaling pathways and decreasing inflammatory mediators.  The combination of a strengthening effect on the immune system while fighting inflammation makes Spearmint a very beneficial essential oil to have around.

Furthermore, it has strong neurological supportive effects.  It is nociceptive – which means that it has a possitive effect on both the central nervous system (CNS) as well as the pheripheral nervous sytem (PNS).  Especially relating to the “noxious stimuli, such as tissue injury and temperature extremes, which activate nociceptors and their pathways. Pain is the subjective experience one feels as a result of the activation of these pathways.”  So it strengthens the nervous system to in this way also relieve pain and pain perception.

A few other benefits that stood out from this study is that Spearmint might be anti-cancer by inhibiting cell proliferation.  It has anti-diabetic effects by activating glucose catabolism.  It decreases white blood cells and increases red blood cells and hemoglobin thus assisting with anti-arthritic benefits.

An interesting fact is that Spearmint is often used in conjunction with Lemongrass essential oil in Beekeeping. It is mainly used during feeding to improve hive health. And is also useful against Varroa mites.  This essential oil truly is an amazing oil with many benefits.

Main Chemical Compounds

The main chemical compound found in Spearmint is monoterpene carvone at about 42%.  This compound is responsible for the following properties as this study showed: anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, neurological benefits, anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-arthritic, anti-convulsant, and has immunomodulatory effects. Spearmint contains between 41-43% of this carvone compound. Other major compounds includes mono- and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons which is responsible for anti-microbial benefits.

How do I use Spearmint

You can use it in baked goods such as brownies, home-made icecreams and smoothies. We have a recipe pack that will help guide you to use essential oils in culinary recipes.  Refer to our responsible usage guide to see how to use essential oils responsibly internally.
