Responsible Usage Guide

This article is a short, to the point one on how to use the OilGrow essential oils – a responsible usage guide so to speak. This is by no means an extensive way of using each oil. One of the most important thing is that LESS IS MORE with pure OilGrow essential oils and blends!

The best and preferred way is to INHALE the tiny volatile molecules. You can use a diffuser or diffuser jewelry. Use a vaporizer, clay burner or steam bath to achieve this. DO NOT USE A NEBULIZER. The oil molecules will be too concentrated if a nebulizer is used. This may harm the mucous membranes in your nasal cavities. It might even corrode the plastic since it’s not been designed for the use with essential oils.

The second best way is to dilute the essential oils or oil blends in a carrier and apply to the skin. The essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants which may cause skin irritation if applied to the skin undiluted. Especially if you have a sensitive skin. Carriers are safe creams or oils which can be applied to the skin. These are items such as un-fragranced aqueous cream or a suitable seed oil (for example fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil or grapeseed oil). You can mix small amounts of essential oils with larger amounts of carriers (0.5 – 10% dilutions). 10% dilutions (10ml essential oil in 100ml carrier) are said to be a therapeutic level. Higher concentrations than this are discouraged due to possible skin irritation reactions.

What does the responsible usage guide say about ingesting it?

Ingestion of essential oils is discouraged by The Aromatherapy Association of South Africa. The reason is simple: oil and water do not mix! The oesophagus membrane is covered by a watery mucous which does not mix with the essential oil. The essential oil causes a burning sensation when taken undiluted. General rule of thumb with ingesting of diluted essential oils is as follows:

  • only ingest oils from plants you would normally eat, for example citrus, herbs or spices.
  • only add 1 drop of oil to 1 cup of liquid (example lukewarm water, milk or a teaspoon of honey in a cup of tea)
  • add a maximum of 3 drops of essential oil to an empty veggie cap, fill with an edible carrier oil and take with plenty of water.

Some caution to the wind:

When you take prescribed chronic medication, enquire from your health practitioner whether the use of essential oils are suitable. If you still experience irritation after dilution of the oil, refrain from using the oil for a while. Keep out of reach of children. Store away from open flames or heat. Store in a cool dark area to preserve the oil for longer. We hope you can use the responsible usage guide well.
