About Thyme

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is proudly sourced from South Africa.  It has an expectantly sweet and extremely strong herbal fragrance. This essential oil is a warm oil and also a top to middle note. The oil has a herbal and stinging taste but rather don’t taste it straight from the bottle. You can take it internally if done so responsibly.  See our responsible usage guide here.

Main Chemical Compounds

The main chemical compounds found in our Thyme essential oil are thymol (between 20%–60%), γ-terpinene (18%–50%), p-cymene (8%–44%), carvacrol (2%–8%), and even linalool (up to 4%). Thymol is mostly the compound responsible for the oil’s anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. The compound, γ-terpinene, is mostly the one responsible for the anti-oxidant and anti-fungal qualities of Thyme essential oil. This have been linked to slowing the progression of diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Benefits

Thyme essential oil benefits the body by improving circulation and expelling toxins. It might help with urination increase which helps the body rid itself of toxins.  It also acts as a stimulant, increasing circulation and raising low blood pressure.

Another effect it is known for is assisting the upper respiratory system as an expectorant. Thyme oil fortifies the lungs, treats colds, coughs, sore throats and diseases such as tonsillitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma. It also helps eliminate phlegm. Thyme benefits the immune system because it stimulates white blood cell production.  This, in turn helps the body fight disease.

Thyme essential oil is also known to help with rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. It is known to ease pain, fatigue, nausea and mood swings. This essential oil has a stimulating effect on the diuretic system. It helps with the removal of uric acid.  Another point of wonder is that Thyme oil acts as a digestive stimulant and intestinal antiseptic – it even expels worms.  It is a urinary antiseptic, helpful for cystitis.

Furthermore, it is known to Thyme oil is anti-septic and anti-bacterial. It protects wounds against infection and inhibits the growth of bacteria, both inside and outside the body. It is especially effective against scalp issues, has a tonic effect to help against dandruff, hair loss, sores, dermatitis, even boils and carbuncles.

An interesting fact about Thyme oil is that it strengthens the nerves and activates brain cells.  This way it supports memory and concentration. It lifts the spirit and releases mental blockages and trauma.

How do I use Thyme essential oil?

This oil can be added to a capsule – 2 drops maximum, filled with Fractionated Coconut Oil.  It can be used in culinary recipes such as in red meat dishes, sauces and even salad dressing. Use one drop at a time and increase if you feel it needs more.  Remember, less is more with essential oil.

When using medicinally in a roller bottle for the digestive system, always dilute well in a carrier oil.

Cautions of Thyme

  • Being a very potent oil, one of the strongest anti-septics. Use cautiously and always highly diluted.
  • Always consult your medical practitioner before using essential oils you are unsure of or if any side effects are experienced because of its use.
  • Do not use topically or diffused around children under the age of six unless very diluted.
  • Keep away from the eyes.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Store in glass, in a cool dry place away from sunlight to preserve longer.
  • Do NOT use during pregnancy!
  • Use in moderation if suffering from high blood pressure.
