get rid of head lice naturally

Children inevitably struggle with the dreaded head lice problem. It’s unavoidable it seems. We have undergone some personal research on this topic and would like to share our amazing findings with you. We stumbled (and planned to be honest) on a way to get rid of head lice naturally. No harsh chemicals, no scalp-burning, eye-stinging ointments and shampoos. OilGrow has an amazing blend meant to keep bugs at bay called Bug Shield. Let’s tell you about that then dive into the practical application.

OilGrow’s Bug Shield Blend

Bug Shield has a few different product applications – each with its unique purpose and application process. It contains the following 100% pure LavenderEucalyptusLemongrassRosemaryCedarwoodClove BudTagetes and Thyme essential oils. Each with its own therapeutic benefits.

We started off with the concentrated blend – this is a blend of 100% pure essential oils all of which works excellently to help keep bugs away. It works for flies, mosquitoes, bed bugs and even the dreaded head lice. You can add this blend to a diffuser at night to assist with keeping the mosquitoes away – all the while, it will also humidify the dry summer air. We found that, for head lice control, you can add about 10 drops to your existing bottle of shampoo and conditioner. If you purchase a scentless shampoo (better for your scalp), perhaps the SLS free variety, Bug Shield can offer a lovely scent alternative while having a therapeutic effect.

This blend can also be found in a 10ml roller bottle, already mixed with grape seed oil to use as a bug repellant roll on when out and about. Works well to take with you on hikes or camps. Just roll around on exposed skin and that should do the trick to protect you.

We also have a Bug Shield glycerine soap. Yes, this one is biodegradable, so is the perfect soap to also take with you on hikes and camps. It can be used as a shampoo or body wash soap. You can use it on animals and it is safe for children as well. You can even use this as a shampoo instead of adding Bug Shield blend to your existing shampoo.

Then the need arose for a Bug Shield Lotion and Spray too. You can use the spray on bedding and on the body to help keep bed bugs away and even mozzies. It will help to repel flies and even spiders. So yes, do take it with you when you’re out in nature. This spray is safe to use on your dogs’ bedding too… You can even spray their fur – just be careful of the eyes and areas they can get to to lick. Use the spray on your children’s hair to maintain a lice free head of hair.

Bug Shield lotion can be applied to your entire body as a body lotion – this will help keep mosquitoes at bay while moisturising your skin. Yes, again, take it with you when out in nature. But this lotion is our secret weapon against head lice. Let’s share the protocol with you that worked best for us.

How to get rid of head lice naturally when you use the OilGrow Bug Shield Lotion

So your kiddo comes home after school scratching like crazy and your heart sinks into your stomach – you dread looking because you suspect that you’ll find head lice. And yes, you do. There they are. Here’s what we suggest you do immediately:

  • Get the kids in the bath, wet their hair and wash with the Bug Shield glycerine soap bar. Rinse. Towel dry
  • Get your equipment ready: a movie for the kids to watch, the fine tooth lice comb, an old toothbrush, a bowl of hot water and a face towel to wipe your comb on.
  • Then, with the hair still wet (towel dried), combed out with a brush, take out a small section of hair and pin the rest with an elastic or a hair clip.
  • You will work through the entire head of hair small section by section. It’s going to take time so we suggest a movie so the little one doesn’t get bored.
  • Apply a generous amount of Bug Shield Lotion to the section, starting at the sculp. Now comb out with those special lice combs – use the densest part of the comb and start flush on the scalp. Comb from route to tip.
  • After each comb, rinse the comb off in the hot water, using an old toothbrush to get all the lice and eggs off. Then wipe it on the face towel. If you don’t do this, you will merely comb the eggs and lice back into the hair.
  • Comb the same section of hair through from all angles on the scalp. Remember to comb from underneath the hair upwards too – not only top down.
  • Comb through a few times, rinsing every time then move on to the next section until the entire head has been combed through after lathering each section with the Bug Shield lotion.
  • Remember to kill the big lice by squishing them between your nails/ nail and comb. This is just to ensure they don’t find their way into someone else’s hair.
  • Once the head is combed through, add some more Bug Shield lotion, massaging it into the scalp and pull through to the tips of the hair.
  • Now leave the lotion in the hair for up to 5 days. Do not wash. During the 5 days, you can spray the head with Bug Shield Spray too.
  • Wash with Bug Shield glycerine soap OR your normal shampoo with added Bug Shield Blend dropped in. You can follow with conditioner.
  • You will need to follow this process again after 1 month just to make sure nothing survived.
  • Keep washing your kid’s hair with shampoo that has Bug Shield added to it just to maintain the hair and keep it free of head lice going forward.

We found that you can actually get rid of head lice naturally this way. Not only do they die, the eggs (those black nits that lies on the scalp) gets combed out easily with the lotion lathered on the head and scalp. When you see those white/ transparent parts that stick to the hair itself, you can just comb over them. Don’t fuss about getting them out since they are merely the shell of the eggs that once housed the lice. The black nits on the scalp is what you need to worry about.
