About Cedarwood

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlanta) – is sourced from Morocco.  It has a strong, spicy, wood-like fragrance. Cedarwood essential oil is a warm oil and also a base note. It is vital that this oil not be ingested. See our responsible usage guide here.

Benefits

Firstly, Cedarwood is known to help oxygenate the body’s cells.  It helps to carry oxygen to the cells via the blood because it attaches to an oxygen molecule. This makes it a great oil for skin conditions and hair loss. This is just one of the main reasons we used it in our Bushwillow Beard oil and some of our soaps. More oxygen in the cells means better operation of cells and less microbes inside these cells. More oxygen can even lead to better concentration and memory recall.

Cedarwood essential oil is also known for its anti-bacterial activity. It makes it great for treating acne and other bacterial infections. It should also help with itchy skin, to soothe and relieve. Its sedative calming benefits assists with better sleep.

An interesting fact is that in 1960 the oil was used to stop moths from eating clothing!

Main Chemical Compounds of Cedarwood

The main chemical compound found in our Basil is sesquiterpenes (between 75-87%) of which α-himachalene is the one that is present in the highest quantity (up to 36%).  The sesquiterpenes in general is responsible for Cedarwood’s potential to assist in cardiovascular health and cancer treatment.  There are also studies that shows that these are the compounds responsible for the oil being a potent anti-microbial. It is known to disrupt the cell walls of fungi and invasive bacteria. The α-himachalenes are part of what makes Cedarwood essential oil a great analgesic, with anti-inflammatory and sedative (calming) properties assisting with stress and mood support.

How do I use Cedarwood

Always refer to our responsible usage guide to see how to use essential oils responsibly in general.  This oil is wonderful to diffuse in your Aroma Diffuser – just add 3 drops to start with.
