About Aniseed

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) – we source this one from a South African producer.  Certainly you can see that we are so proud to have this oil as part of our product house.  You can easily use Aniseed and Fennel essential oils interchangeably. You can read more about the study we’ve done here. It has a lovely strong fragrance which is similar to liquorice. The seeds are often used in South African rusks. Aniseed essential oil is a warm oil and also a top note. The oil has a sweet taste much like that of teething gel. You can take it internally, if done responsibly. See our responsible usage guide here.

Firstly, Aniseed is known to be a carminative (relieves flatulence), in light of that, it has the wonderful ability to decrease bloating and in turn, assist the digestive tract to function optimally. In higher doses, use it as an anti-spasmodic for tummy cramps. It is also a very effective treatment for digestive situations such as indigestion and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Aniseed is known to stimulate the digestive system by increasing the digestibility of nutrients, by increasing the secretion of digestive enzymes and hepatic (liver) activity. In addition, there are reports that this essential oil assists with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and a cough. It is a well known expectorant. The anti-septic properties makes Aniseed very helpful to clean small cuts and scrapes and is great to help heal wounds faster.

Furthermore, it even has a bit of a narcotic (affects mood) or sedative effect. This helps the body cope with general daily stress. But it might even help treat convulsions and epilepsy. It is known to calm anxiety. Lastly, Aniseed can help treat other nervous conditions and lessen panic attacks.

Main Chemical Compounds

The main chemical compound found in Aniseed (and Fennel) is trans-anethole. This compound is responsible for the following properties: anti-metastatic activity (inhibits the spread of disease), anti-oxidative, anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory. Aniseed contains between 77-94% and Fennel between 35 and 82% of this trans-anethole compound.

How do I use Aniseed

You can use it in baked goods such as rusks. We have a recipe pack that will help guide you to use essential oils in culinary recipes.  Refer to our responsible usage guide to see how to use essential oils responsibly internally.

For wound cleaning use aniseed mixed in a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond or Castor oil. Or make a blend for tummy help in Avocado oil in a roller bottle.  Moreover, you can diffuse aniseed in your aroma diffuser as is if you love the smell.
